Finding a Good Trainer

Training dogs has changed a lot over the years and whilst all trainers use slightly different techniques, it is no longer considered desirable or acceptable to use harsh or punitive methods. We believe that the way to show your dog how to behave is through rewards, fun and patience. Training should always involve plenty of tasty treats, exciting toys and above all kindness. We do not advocate the use of choke/check chains or physical punishment.

We highly recommend that you consider the following points when choosing your trainer:

• Personal recommendations from friends, neighbours or your vet are a good place to start
• Choosing members of reputable training organisations, should ensure the trainer is kind, fair and effective.
• Visit first without your dog to ensure that you approve of the setting and style of training - if unsure do not sign up
• Class size is important - smaller classes will ensure more individual attention
• The type of environment you will be training in . an outdoor natural environment is better for getting your dog accustomed to real life situations
• The class should be suited to your dog.s age and ability
• Remember the nearest class is not necessarily the best
• Good classes book up quickly so ensure you start looking early
